The Etsy Strike: Thoughts from a handmade witchy seller

Like many other Etsy sellers, I put my Etsy shop in 'vacation mode' for the last week to protest Etsy's fee hike. Also, um, to have a week off the same week as my partner. Have I lost some credibility there? I might have lost some credibility. Look, I'm not all gung-ho against Etsy; I don't think they're all that great either. They've cornered the handmade market and then allowed it to be flooded with cheap wholesale crap - I'm not happy about that. They've imposed impossible standards with their 'Star Seller' program that mean if I don't answer a customer's message within 24 hours - even if it's a weekend or I'm super stressed or just having a bad day - their algorithm takes money out of my pocket by showing my shop to fewer potential customers. I'm not happy about that. And when I first started out, they took 75% of my income and held it for long enough that many other people in my position would have gone out of busines...

Watercolour moon phases & Ancestry

Here's my latest watercolour effort; a painting of the moon phases over the sea. I added some gold metallic marker and white gel pen to give it some detail. This idea came from a Skillshare class. In other news, I got my DNA ancestry results back! I've been waiting a long time for this. I already know I have some Scottish ancestry and a little bit of Irish. Here's the results: So that's 45% England & Northwestern Europe (on the website this is narrowed down to Yorkshire and the surrounding areas), 44% Scotland, 9% Ireland, and 2% Sweden and Denmark. One big surprise is that there's so much Scottish in there, considering I only have one Scottish grandparent. This means I must have more genes from my Grandad than from my Grandma on that side. It's also possible that there's a little on my Dad's side contributing, as many English people apparently have a bit of Scottish ancestry without knowing it. Gouache tree paintings

Gouache might be my new favourite medium. I got some cheap Reeves tubes for a tenner and I absolutely love them. I'm using them on mixed media paper at the moment, which I hope is the right stuff. It seems to work OK for now. I'm not sure what this series is all about, but I'm going for a sort of spiritual, colourful vibe with some doodly elements.
